I guess the fertilizing and compost I added at the right time, plus the fact that the bushes are over a dozen years old, had something to do with the incredible blueberry harvest this year. YUM. The pie was the best ever.

I am lucky enough to have surprisingly good conditions for growing lavender. Most of it is pretty much spent at this time of year, but the lavender grosso blooms latest and is still nice to pick and dry. Intensely fragrant, it’s good in little organza bags in your closet to repel moths. But maybe I should make a wreath?

Just harvested lavender grosso, ready to dry for sachet or cooking.

This year my sweetpeas have done so well. I’ve learned that they really do need loose, fertile soil and a lot of sun. Even in this heatwave (Seattle is having a record-breaking five days over 90), they are blooming so beautifully. They seem to be most fragrant in the late afternoons and early evenings, after the sun has faded.

Garden sweetpeas.

I fertilized the blueberry bushes at the right time this spring, and I wasn’t stingy. They really liked it. These are almost the size of a quarter. We use mosquito netting and clothespins to close up the edges because the birds would eat them all. I think a pie is in our future.

A very nice volunteer plant in my Seattle garden, grows in a clump with those cute clover-type leaves, blooms OK in shade or sun.

The squirrels have left us a strawberry, heart shaped. Thank you.

This is my backyard, with the kale flowering in the background. There are three different kind of orange lilies in this photo. Upper right is an oriental lily, lower left are Peruvian lilies, or alstroemeria, and in the center and lower right are daylilies.

The slugs and snails have not given the pansies much peace, but what with the warmer, dryer weather and beer traps, I think there will be more coming in.

At the incredible Bayview Nursery in Whidbey Island, WA, the combination of horticultural skill AND beautiful, artful display came together brilliantly in this tall raised basket of starry petunias.

We have a small cherry tree that has not had cherries for awhile, for different reasons. Hubby put a big piece of mosquito netting around one branch clipped close with clothespins, and we actually have some ripe red ones. So very shiny and sweet.

One of the first roses to bloom this year in my garden is a David Austin rose, Carding Mill. The weather is still quite cool and rainy in Seattle, and my fifteen different rosebushes are taking their time to bloom.

Apricot colored, almost orange, Carding Mill rose with soft shadows and a raindrop or two.
