Winter scene in Purchase NY, guest image

A very fine winter scene of the melting snow by a relative who lives on the East Coast. I love this image!

Air plants!

An exciting thing happened. Someone sent me a gift of 11 air plants! I’ve kept some air plants alive for a few years so I’m pretty sure I know what to do with them, but I’m hoping these don’t need unusual care. What I know to do is soak them for half an hour once a week (upside down so their little butts are in the air), shake off excess water, and keep on a bright windowsill with lots of air circulation. Makes sense, right? Anyone out there know what kinds these are? I’ve included a picture with numbers to help you tell me what’s what if you know. Thanks in advance!

All probably some kind of tillandsias???

Know any names? Please post in comments. Thanks!

Autumn roses

Not this year’s roses, but picked exactly at this time of year. Every year I reward myself with an autumn bouquet.

Rose harvest

I hate cutting my roses since I can see the rose bed from the house and they look so lovely out there, blooming for me and any passers-by. But I had to pick them ahead of the big rain.

Raindrops on roses

We got maybe a tenth of an inch of rain, more than the entire summer here in Seattle! But a big rain is coming in a couple of days, thank goodness, maybe two inches over a few days. The garden is so thirsty. If you grow roses, pick them and enjoy a bouquet if a big rain is coming. No sense in letting them get ruined and go to waste.

Threatening sky

Rose gardeners PSA: If it’s going to rain big, go out there and cut your opened roses for bouquets. They’ll just get ruined if you leave them out there.

Rain is coming. Might as well cut roses and bring inside.

Peace rose after rain

The Peace rose is among the first to bloom in my rose garden. So pretty after a bit of rain.

The Peace rose is a yellow rose with deep pink edges, and a very vigorous rose bush

Crescent moon

We were so lucky to be able to stay at a cabin in Freeland, WA on Whidbey Island with an incredible view. The weather has been unbeatable, so warm and clear.

Soaking pea seeds

We’ve had three days of really nice weather—dry and not too cold. Time to start peas outside! I like to soak them for a few hours before they go in the ground. So exciting to be planting something for spring.
